Indigenous Teacher Education (ITE) Engagement Initiative

In 2024-2025, Medow Consulting supported the Indigenous Institutes Consortium (IIC) on its Indigenous Teacher Education (ITE) initiative, funded by the Rideau Hall Foundation (RHF).

In 2025, Medow Consulting developed the final ITE report, Expanding the Number of Indigenous Teachers Trained through an Indigenous Framework: Outcomes from the Indigenous Institutes Consortium Indigenous Teacher Education Engagement Process, summarizing findings from the engagements that took place in 2024-2025.

The Engagement Process

The initiative brought together Indigenous Teacher Education leaders, regulatory bodies, Indigenous Institutes, post-secondary institutions, and government partners to explore pathways to increase the number of Indigenous teachers trained through Indigenous frameworks, with a goal of 10,000 new Indigenous teachers nationally.

Medow provided research and policy analysis, facilitation planning support, and outcomes reporting for three major convenings:

  • A national in-person workshop in Halifax (October 2024)

  • A national virtual policy forum (February 2025)

  • An Ontario-focused virtual policy forum (April 2025)

Key Recommendations

The final report outlines five focus areas:

  1. Enable accreditation of independent Indigenous Institute Indigenous Teacher Education Programs

  2. Develop and Introduce Indigenous Teacher Education Program Accreditation Standards/Responsibilities

  3. Set Targets and Measure Progress toward Increasing the Number of Indigenous Teachers

  4. Fund Progress toward Increasing the Number of Indigenous Teachers

  5. Prioritize Retention: Support Indigenous Teachers
