National Indigenous Education Symposium (NIES) 2024 Outcomes Report

In 2024, Medow Consulting developed the outcomes report, Empowering Learners, Communities, and Leaders to Strengthen Indigenous Education Pathways, for the Indigenous Institutes Consortium (IIC). The report summarizes the key themes and directions for change from the National Indigenous Education Symposium (NIES), an annual gathering jointly hosted by the IIC and Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) that brings together post-secondary leaders, industry, government, philanthropic organizations, and other partners committed to advancing Indigenous post-secondary education and training. NIES 2024 was held in Kjiputuk (Halifax) in Mi’Kma’ki, the homeland of the Mi’Kaq people. Over 330 participants attended, marking the 30th anniversary of the IIC.  

Key Directions for Change
Building on the priorities identified through NIES 2023, the report highlights three focus areas for advancing Indigenous post-secondary education: driving institution-level change to increase capacity, improve outcomes, and enhance accountability; creating system-level conditions for success for Indigenous learners, communities, and Nations; and strengthening relationships and networks for long-term systemic change.
